After Treatment Care

Most patients walk with support the day after knee replacement. The first six weeks decide how well your new knee will work.

Week 1 to 2

  • Walk with a walker several times a day.
  • Do your physiotherapy exercises 2 to 3 times daily.
  • Keep the wound dry until stitches or staples are removed.

Week 3 to 4

  • Move from a walker to a walking stick.
  • Aim to bend your knee to 90 degrees.

Week 5 to 6

  • Most people can climb stairs and do light daily work.
  • Short flights home are usually allowed after your surgeon's check.

Warning signs

Call your doctor if you notice fever, a red or leaking wound, or swelling and pain in the calf.
