Heart Treatment

Coronary angioplasty with a drug-eluting stent costs between US$3,000 and $5,500 at leading private hospitals in India for a single-stent procedure. Each additional stent adds roughly $800 to $2,500. The same procedure commonly costs $30,000 to $50,000 in the United States — one of the widest cost gaps in all of medical travel.

What the cost covers

A typical all-inclusive angioplasty package includes:

  • Coronary angiography done in the same sitting (usually $400 to $700 on its own)
  • The cath lab, guiding catheters, balloons and one drug-eluting stent
  • Cardiologist, anaesthesia support and nursing charges
  • 1 to 2 days in hospital, including any ICU monitoring
  • Routine in-hospital medicines and discharge review

If the angiography finds blockages that can be treated with medicines alone, you pay only for the diagnostic work-up — always ask whether angiography and angioplasty are quoted separately or together.

What moves the price up or down

  1. Stent brand and type. Indian-made drug-eluting stents are the most economical; imported stents add cost. All stents used in India must meet national quality standards.
  2. Number and complexity of blockages. Long lesions, calcified arteries needing rotablation, or left-main disease increase cath-lab time and stent count.
  3. Emergency versus planned. Primary angioplasty during a heart attack costs similar to or a little more than planned procedures, but involves longer ICU care.
  4. Hospital tier. Premium hospitals in metro cities charge more than high-volume regional centres.

Planning your visit

A planned angioplasty usually needs only 3 to 5 days in India: pre-procedure tests on day 1 or 2, the procedure, and discharge the next day if all is well. Before flying, your cardiologist will start dual antiplatelet medicines (blood thinners such as aspirin plus another agent), which you must continue for at least 12 months and carry home in sufficient supply. Keep a copy of your cath films and the stent passport — you will need both for follow-up at home.

After your stent, focus on prevention: quit smoking, control blood pressure and diabetes, and complete cardiac rehabilitation if advised. See our guides on the best heart hospitals in India and CABG cost if your blockages may need surgery instead.

Costs here are indicative published ranges and vary by hospital; ask for a personalised quote with your reports.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a stent last?

A drug-eluting stent is permanent and keeps the artery open for life in most patients. A small number develop re-narrowing inside the stent, which is why taking your blood-thinning medicines exactly as prescribed matters so much.
